As with other medically-related hair loss conditions, we are able to create custom made pieces that will reflect your aesthetic and lifestyle. Approaching chemotherapy-related hair loss, however, is a slightly different process from other forms of hair loss due to the following factors:
1. The timing aspect of losing one's hair
Most patients undergoing chemotherapy will experience hair loss within 10 to 21 days after treatment begins. As this sudden loss of hair can be quite a shock to many patients, we recommend coming in for a private consultation as soon as possible, and prior to your scheduled treatments if time allows. This way, we can help you to select a medical full lace human hair wig or hairpiece that looks natural, is comfortable and easy to style, and most importantly, will be completed within the required time frame.
2. Client sensitivity to extraneous materials and fasteners as methods of attachment
Unlike other conditions of hair loss, where we can opt for a full hair system with a semi-permanent method of attachment, we are limited to the option of a full lace wig for chemotherapy-related hair loss. We hardly see this option as a limitation, however, as our full lace wigs are personally sized to fit like a prosthetic or glove for each individual. This allows for low to medium impact physical activities, with worry that your hair will fall off.
The lightweight construction of the base material of our wigs results in breathability that won't make you feel too hot or uncomfortable. This is extremely important as overheating is a common reaction to chemotherapy.
Full lace wigs are individually hand-tied with Remy hair, onto a silk net base. Along with being made to look as though your own hair is growing out of your own scalp, there will be no extra metal clasps or hard fasteners. Thus, you will be able to wear and remove your wig without any discomfort.
2. Transitioning to the growth of your own natural hair
Fortunately, chemotherapy-related hair loss is often temporary. Most of our chemotherapy clients opt to have their lace wigs customized to the colour, length and texture of their natural hair prior to chemo, in order to ease the transition of hair loss. As their natural hair begins to grow, this transition is continued. With sufficient hair growth, a hair system can now be employed, offering greater freedom in terms on all day wear, while enabling medium to high impact activities. Once your own hair has grown to a suitable length, you have the option of either removing the hair system completely or adding hair extensions for volume and length. In fact, we have a few clients who have to continue to wear their post-chemo extensions for years past their initial treatment.
